MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — COVID-19 has sent many people to the unemployment line, but for workers looking to re-enter the workforce, there's new virtual workshops providing tools to succeed.

There's strong evidence of job opportunities building across the Treasure Coast.

"So far we've been lucky, so our goal is to maintain and stay ahead and that's what we're trying to do," said Carlos Sanchez, Hooks Construction Co. superintendent. "You do the math."

For people looking to build or rebuild their careers, the CareerSource Research Coast offers daily virtual workshops and the impact is already being felt.

"They're sad. They're hurt. They're upset. And after the workshop, they are a different person," said Leanna Stromer, CareerSource Research Coast virtual workshop instructor. "They have hope, more questions, and they sign up for more workshops."

Virtual workshops are new; instructors cover job search strategies, resume building, research and how to market yourself. Marketing oneself also entails creating a LinkedIn account, if you don't have one, and how to build your own website, if your industry calls for it.

"The job search today is very much an excercise in marketing," said Dale Shepperson, CareerSource Research Coast regional training and development manager. "Employers are looking to find the best person possible for the opening they have available and you have to convince them that you’re that person."

"You have to target," added Stromer.

In the workshop entitled "Interview Prep," participants even develop their own 30-second commercial and elevator pitch. The goal is to professionally master selling oneself.

Workshops last about an hour and include lecture and hands-on assignments. Participants will also be encouraged to interact and chat.

"How do we develop a plan that will lead us down a road to employment success," Shepperson said.
