PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Family and loved ones of a young girl and her step-grandfather, who were shot and killed last week, said goodbye to them at their funeral Tuesday.

The service for Amarilyss Martinez, 8, and Felix Rivera, 54, was held at Christ Fellowship in Port St. Lucie.

Port St. Lucie police said the young girl’s mother, Alyssa Torres, shot and killed both of them.

Police have still not released any possible motives for the shooting.

The pastor for the service, Travis O’Neal, said he knew this was a hard time for a very large family, and hoped to uplift them with his service.

“I’ve already noticed there is just a little bit more emotion, a little more tension in the room, so tonight I will just try to honor the families. Really, there’s just things we don’t understand. Life happens and a lot of times we don’t understand why things like this happen. So, I really just want to focus on their lives and the joy they brought to people while they were here, especially the little girl ‘Peanut.' Every time I hear her name, I see family members smile, so I really just want to focus on that,” O’Neal said.

Hundreds of people came to the church throughout the day and evening.

Torres is still in jail with no bond.
