FORT PIERCE, Fla-- A major part of the Fort Pierce waterfront is about to get a makeover.

Ground was broken Monday for a new restaurant next to the city marina.

Crabby’s Dockside will take over the space that had been the Original Tiki Bar for the past 20 years.

The decision by city leaders last year to offer the lease to a new restaurant created some controversy, but the new management group is stressing local ties and local hires.

"We need to hire; hopefully all those people are more than welcome to come back if they can find something temporarily while we’re reconstructing. They were a great staff. Every time I came, they were a great staff. They’re the exact type of people we like to hire," said Beachside Hospitality Group Vice President Gary Hardie.

When the Original Tiki Bar closed last month, the owners placed the majority of its staff at other restaurants.

If all goes as planned, Crabby’s Dockside will be up and running next march.
