PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Commission is recommending Florida lawmakers change a law that they say left open a door for Palm Beach County to train charter school guards privately.

“Only sheriff’s office should do guardian training, period,” Commission Chairman Bob Gualtieri said as the commission met for two days in Orlando.

Before the start of the current school year, commission members objected to the news that the guards were being trained by a private security firm in Boynton Beach.

A study by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office flagged concerns about the training, including the scoring for firearms testing.

Palm Beach County’s School District stopped the training and had the guards restart training with the sheriff’s office.

The guards finished the training on Sept. 30.

“I think with what they experienced in Palm Beach County that they won’t go down that path again,” Gualtieri said.
