FDOT operators monitoring I-95 cameras

There are extra eyes on I-95 from Broward County to Brevard. The Florida Department of Transportation Operators are monitoring nearly 300 cameras very closely this weekend. There is a camera at about every mile of I-95.

Drivers won't know it, but operators are standing by in case they need to send a road ranger to the highway to investigate any incident. The Florida Highway Patrol is also out in full force. This weekend there is a national click it or ticket enforcement campaign.

"We’ll be out there looking for aggressive drivers, people that are speeding , not wearing their seat belt, and of course we’ll be looking for the impaired driver," said Sergeant Mark Wysocky, Public Affairs Officer for the Florida Highway Patrol.

Gassed up and ready to drive, South Floridians hit the highways for Memorial Day weekend, some trying to leave earlier to beat the traffic.
"It's a nightmare," said Jennifer Charles who travels to Orlando with her family every Memorial Day weekend.

Charles doesn't mind a little traffic. She's afraid of distracted drivers.

"People braking every two seconds," she added.

Lixzet Hidalgo and her family agree. They are also on the way to Orlando and try to avoid any erratic drivers.

"They talk too much on the telephone, texting," said Hidalgo.

That's the kind of activity FDOT operators at the Traffic Management Center in Fort Lauderdale are looking for. They can pan and zoom to take a closer look at any suspicious activity.
