Six students from Glades Central Community High School have a lot to smile about.
The students are the recipients of $3,500 worth of scholarships.
The scholarships are from the T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society named after the first African-American doctor in West Palm Beach.
T. Leroy Jefferson was also known as the “bicycle doctor” because that’s the transportation he used to make his rounds and house calls.
“We always hear about gunshots and violence in the Glades; T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society is trying to help change that,” said Dr. Colette Brown-Graham, the society’s past president and scholarship committee chair.
Five high school students were awarded $500 scholarships. One student was awarded $1,000.
Students were selected based on their essay and academic achievements.
