FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Trauma is the leading cause of death in people ages 44 and under. But Wednesday was a day to celebrate trauma survivors on the Treasure Coast.
Dozens of former trauma patients had the chance to reunite with the doctors and nurses that took care of them at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute in Fort Pierce.
Jesse Jewett was in a coma for 30 days after a car accident, but now works as a volunteer firefighter.
“The good Lord has brought me where I am and I wanted to thank Dr. Moore and trauma and Lawnwood since they did a lot," said Jewett.
“It’s very gratifying to see how much progress they’ve made since they left hospital. Many patients come here not knowing what happened to them, with very severe injuries," said Dr. Jason Moore.
Lawnwood Regional has been a designated trauma center since 2009, and has served nearly 20-thousand patients since its inception.
