Special Easter egg hunt

A special Easter egg hunt was held Wednesday morning for children who normally don’t have the chance to participate in the fun.

For the third year the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad hosted a handful of visually impaired children from St. Lucie County schools.

They covered a field at Westgate Baptist Church in Fort Pierce with beeping Easter eggs, and led them around until the bounty was captured.

“Some of these kids have never, and I repeat never, had the chance to hunt for Easter eggs on Easter,” St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said.

“It’s such a great opportunity for our kids to get out of the school environment and into the community environment where things are a little different,” said Vivian Hill with St. Lucie County schools.

The teachers say while this is great fun for the kids, it’s also an important exercise because they need to rely on their other senses.

And while the specially-designed eggs couldn’t be taken home, each child was given a bag full of treats at the end of the day.
