Spring training is wrapping up, but the New York Mets are making sure some of their youngest fans are well fed into the summer.

Dozens of minor leaguers took Monday morning to help with the Treasure Coast food bank’s backpack program.

It provides food to children who are getting free or reduced price lunches at school and need meals on the weekend.

“(The program ensures children) go home and (don’t) worry about where their meal is coming from and get back to school Monday full and prepared to continue to learn,” said Krista Garofalo of TC Food Bank.

“We really want to instill in them while they’re here in spring training how important it is to help in their communities, no matter which team they end up going to,” said Kasey Blair of the St. Lucie Mets.

Each of the 1,500 backpacks contains enough food for five meals.

The Mets have also held food drives, and a “strike out hunger” event at First Data Field.
