FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Fort Pierce Police Department has confirmed one person is dead following a rollover crash involving 5 vehicles at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Edwards Road.
The crash occurred shortly after 12 p.m. Monday, prompting a long closure of the intersection as emergency crews responded to the scene. The road has since reopened to traffic.
WPTV's Zitlali Solache spoke with nearby residents, employees and commuters who witnessed the road closures Monday afternoon.
“On the way in I noticed that the road was blocked off right there by the Marathon and I had to go up about two blocks to get here," said Jesse Pena.
Pena was one of hundreds who saw the tragic scene. Many drivers were not surprised to learn the fatal crash happened on the busy intersection.
The identities of those involved have not yet been released, and it is unclear how many others may have been injured.
