ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. -- The St Lucie County Tax Collector admits it was a mistake to hold a 50-50 raffle to benefit Bahamas relief and the holiday office party.

“I tell the whole public point blank we messed up,” said Chris Craft as he faced cameras in his Fort Pierce office. “We’re going to make changes for anything done in the future it’s never the intention of myself or my employees to mislead the public.”

The fine print at the bottom of the poster set off reactions on social media among many who have given or are organizing relief efforts for the islands hit by Hurricane Dorian.

“We’re raising this money for the people not to gain by it and when I hear people gaining by it just upsets us all,” says Charlie Conigliaro, president of the Stuart Sailfish Club which has sent over 300 tons of supplies to the Bahamas.

He says now all of the $1,200 raised will go to Bahamas relief.
