PALM BEACH COUTNY, Fla. — A passenger was killed after a vehicle crashed into a canal early Thursday morning in western Delray Beach.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said a 2007 Chevrolet was traveling southbound in the 14000 block of Smith Sundy Road at 2:49 a.m.

For unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the road in a southwest direction, hitting an embankment and rolling over into a drainage canal.

The vehicle came to a final rest on its roof in about 5 feet of water.

PBSO said one passenger escaped the vehicle without injury before fire rescue personnel arrived. The driver was rescued and suffered minor injuries.

However, another passenger, identified as Miguel Angiel Hernandez, was apparently trapped inside the vehicle and was later removed by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

Hernandez, whose age is about 30 to 32 said PBSO, was transported to Delray Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:11 a.m.

The incident report says charges are pending in the case.
