DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- A foul smell in parts of southern Palm Beach County has had people plugging their noses.

The smell has been around Interstate 95 between Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. It comes from the South Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.

“Rancid, terrible, almost impossible to describe,” said Alex Gulkin.

“It is very much a septic smell, raw sewage smell,” said Sean LeFloch.

LeFloch owns a CrossFit gym down the street. He said the smell will blow into the gym. “A little to close for comfort every once in a while,” he said.

The smell started last fall.

The plant’s manager, Doug Levine, said they started a construction project in September 2018, that is why the odor started.

Gulkin said she hopes the project hurries along because driving to work with the smell was horrible.

“It was a mixture of rot and like fecal matter of large mammals," said Gulkin.

Levine said the construction project is expected to be done by the end of February, and that should get rid of the odor people have been dealing with since last fall.
