If you live in Palm Beach County you’re more likely to become a victim of a car theft than anywhere else in the state. A recent National Insurance Crime Bureau report shows South Florida takes the number 1 spot for stolen cars for the second year in a row.
“A trend we’ve noticed lately is overnight auto thefts and auto burglaries in neighborhoods,” said Palm Beach Gardens Police Major Paul Rogers.
However, it isn’t just becoming more common in Palm Beach Gardens. Police Departments throughout South Florida report this crime is on the rise.
“When the criminals steal the cars they aren’t just taking them to joy ride, they are also committing other crimes with these cars and creating a big safety issue for the public,” said Major Rogers.
Police can’t stress enough how important it is to take your keys with you every time you walk away from your car.
“Some people even say that I purposefully left my key fob in there because it’s just easier for me to get in and out of my car and go where I need to,” said Major Rogers.
Yet doing so only makes you an easy target, and it’s an expensive mistake to make.
Police suggest a few safety tips to prevent becoming a victim of car theft.
In public shopping centers, always park your car under a light and close to the store.
At home, always take valuables out every night along with your car key and make sure to lock it.
Police also say investing in a home surveillance system could help track down the criminal if you do become a target.
