Volkswagen to start emission scandal buybacks next month

Diesel drivers deceived by Volkswagen's emissions scandal may soon get their money back. A federal judge has approved a 14.7 billion dollar settlement. The first buybacks are expected to happen as soon as next month.

Walter Melnyk may soon part with his Volkswagen Golf after one year of fighting with the giant automaker.

"We started September 2015 and it's almost November 2016, so they haven't been fair to me really," said Melnyk.

One month after Melnyk bought the car, he learned about Volkswagen's diesel emission scandal. The car maker marketed and sold 2 and 3 liter diesel engine cars as having lower emissions than they actually had.

"So if the car is defective, they have to take it back," said Melnyk who won a Florida Lemon Law case against Volkswagen back in January.

Cars sold from 2009 to 2016 can be repaired or bought back.

"I'm going to get my money, which I hope is soon. Maybe I'll get it for Christmas," said Melnyk.

The settlement announced Tuesday only includes the 2 liter engine Volkswagen and Audi cars. There are still legal hearings regarding the 3 liter engines. Affected owners have until September 2018 to file a claim.
