JUPITER, Fla. — Pitchers and catchers started spring training on Tuesday in Florida, kicking off a lucrative time of year for some businesses.
"The next five weeks we literally triple our sales,” says Vicki Parmeleee, owner of Jumby Bay Grill near Roger Dean Stadium.
Jupiter has been a spring training site for two decades now. It’s currently home to the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins.
West Palm Beach recently landed the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals and the Mets train in Port St. Lucie.
"We have people coming every year and the staff knows them by name and we look forward to seeing them each year, some come earlier and now we have folks coming in December getting ready for spring training," Parmelee says.
Some estimates have spring training benefiting Florida statewide by nearly $700 million.
