To combat water woes, Martin County to use more dollars to market tourism

After a summer of blue-green algae, and a fall with red tide, Martin County wants to put more money toward tourism.

On Tuesday, County Commissioners agreed to a plan that would reallocate some bed tax money for additional marketing efforts.

Tourism and Marketing Manager Nerissa Okiye says her office needs to keep targeting out of state visitors while being transparent about any potential water issues.

"People are in different phases of trip planning. That's where our concerns come from. If I hear something now, am I just going to cancel their trip, or are they going to go somewhere else?" said Okiye.

Okiye says it is key to let visitors know there are other things to do in Martin County away from the water.

She added the new marketing dollars should be in her budget by the beginning of the year.
