Martin County Commissioners took the first step Tuesday night allowing the county fairgrounds to move out west.
By a 3-2 vote, the commission agreed to draw up a lease agreement with the Martin County Fair Association for a 107-acre site east of the Indiantown Airport.
Fair manager Jay Spicer says their current 12-acre site in Stuart is old and rundown. A new site he says would allow them to grow on their success by bringing in new acts, and bigger crowds.
“We’re going to look at that one site and focus 100% of our energies there. We couldn’t do any fundraising until we had a place to go and that’s all we wanted was a commitment from the county on where could we go," said Spicer.
Part of the agreement would have the county extending water and sewer service to the property.
Even if an agreement is reached, it would still be at least two years before the fair makes its move.
