WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- City planners are looking to make West Palm Beach more "pedestrian friendly" and they're going about it in an interesting way.

The city placed dancers in the crosswalk at the intersection of Quadrille Boulevard and Clematis Street in downtown.

Officials say the point is to draw attention to the fact that the area is one of the most congested intersections downtown, and it may need some reworking.

When people would approach the dancers and ask what is happening, volunteers asked them to fill out surveys about how they get around downtown.

It's part of a six-month project funded by a research group out of Sweden.

Raphael Clemente with the West Palm Beach Development Association says, "Having vibrant, walkable public spaces is a very big attractor of investment and business revenue of residential people, so we are really trying to get it right and get it as right as we can....and using this sort of process of gathering information and then also raising awareness combined is a great way to go about it."

The city has been given $30,000 to study ways to improve walkability downtown, then make needed changes.
