PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — A woman and a 1-month-old girl were killed in a fiery crash involving a dump truck in western Palm Beach County on Monday afternoon, authorities say.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said the wreck between a dump truck and sedan happened just before 3:30 p.m. on State Road 80 and Hatton Highway.
Firefighters at the scene said the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
Florida Highway Patrol identified the victims as 26-year-old Antoinette Johnson and 1-month-old Alina Johnson, both of Pahokee.
The FHP report said the dump truck was turning left from State Road 80 onto Hatton Highway. Antoinette Johnson was driving a 2008 Chevy Impala westbound on State Road 80, approaching Hatton Highway in the inside lane.
The Impala's front struck the right rear of the dump truck.
Upon impact, the Impala became engulfed in flames and spun out of control, rotating clockwise and coming to final rest facing a southeasterly direction at the intersection.
The driver of the dump truck stopped and pulled over onto the northern side of Hatton Highway.
FHP said both the both Antoinette Johnson and the baby died at the scene. The driver of the dump truck was not hurt.
Johnson's mother said Antoinette was heading back after picking up her baby's birth certificate.
The case is still under investigation, said FHP.
