WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A 55-year-old woman was killed after West Palm Beach police said she was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning, the agency said Monday.
Rescuers responded to the incident at 2:41 a.m. in the 1500 block of Belvedere Road, just west of Interstate 95.
Police said Penelope Lynn Kenyon of Palm Springs was crossing the road from south to north with a relative when a westbound car struck her.
Kenyon was critically injured and died in surgery at 5:33 a.m. Sunday at St. Mary's Medical Center. Police said the relative who was with Kenyon, her 52-year-old stepbrother, Robert Thibault, was not hurt.
The pair were walking from a Wawa to a nearby IHOP restaurant when the crash happened, according to police.
The son of the victim, Michael Shipley, called WPTV's newsroom Monday saying the family is seeking justice.
"My uncle told me he heard the engine revving up by the train tracks," Shipley told WPTV's Joel Lopez. "By then the cars were going so fast they didn't even see it. She made it across the street, and they clipped her. Right when she was about to step on the sidewalk. She was talking to him when they were loading her up in the ambulance. He told me that she was still alive."
Investigators recovered evidence at the scene and determined the car that struck Kenyon was a black Cadillac ATS or CT4 that will have damage to the front right corner and is missing the passenger side mirror.
Police said they also obtained video of the crash and are reviewing it.
"My heart is heavy man," Shipley said. "It's my mother and I miss her, and I hope we find out who did this."
Elizabeth Bergemann, the daughter of Kenyon, said: "I have my ups and downs right now. She's a survivor, you know, so to get that call is a complete shock."
Judy Kenyon, the sister-in-law of the victim, said: "I've known her since she was 17. I'm 60 years old and my heart is broken."
Then she had a message for the driver.
"You had to know that you hurt someone," she said."You didn't surrender aid and she's somebody's family. How would you feel if somebody did that to you?"
Anyone with information about the crash or the driver is urged to call the West Palm Beach Police Department at 561-822-1900. You can also report a tip anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-TIPS.
