Various speakers took to the podium to honor Gold Star families whose loved ones gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"Freedom is not free. It has cost thousands and thousands of lives so we can continue to live as Americans," said Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams.
Organizers say they hope the monument will be a way for Gold Star families in our area to come together and meet one another.
The memorial is expected to be completed in September.
