Report: South Florida is one of the most dangerous areas in U.S. for pedestrians

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — South Florida is one of the most dangerous parts of the country for pedestrians, according to a new report.

The organizations Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition just released its "Dangerous By Design" study.

It measured how many pedestrians are hit and killed by drivers every year, in relation to the population of those areas.

The report found that the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metropolitan area is the 14th most dangerous place in America for pedestrians.

The study said there were 1,549 pedestrian deaths in that region between 2008 and 2017.

According to the report, the top six most dangerous areas in the country are all in Florida:

  1. Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford
  2. Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach
  3. Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville
  4. North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton
  5. Lakeland-Winter Haven
  6. Jacksonville

The deadliest states for pedestrians, according to the report are:

  1. Florida
  2. Alabama
  3. Delaware
  4. Louisiana
  5. Mississippi

The study calls on federal, state, and local governments to invest in projects that will make our streets safer.
