A man was found dead shortly after midnight near the intersection of Haverhill Road and Purdy Lane.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the body was found at the 2400 block of South Haverhill Rd.

Investigators said the victim, whose name has not been released, was found by a passerby at the scene.

An initial news release from PBSO spokeswoman Teri Barbera said it appeared the man may have been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.

Investigators said later Tuesday an elderly victim's 2008 Mercury Milan was recovered in Broward County off Interstate 95 at 3 a.m. The vehicle has front end and windshield damage.

"I’m totally shocked. I know that man for a while and he was a very good friend of mine," said the victim's roomate who wants to go by James.

James says he got a call from a detective on Tuesday telling him his 64-year-old roommate is dead. He was shaken by the news and shocked to learn his roommate's car was found abandoned in Broward County.

"To hear that it was found in Broward County, that’s bizarre. I don’t understand anything," he said.

James says he's been in Miami. He says his roommate, who we are no identifying until next of kin is notified, usually works around the clock as a security guard. James says he was a quiet man who worked hard, working three jobs. He hopes someone speaks up.

"We need to find out what happened to him. I have no clue what happened to him," he added.

Anyone who may have seen the vehicle or who may have information regarding this incident is asked to contact The Violent Crimes Division at 561-688-4023 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS
