In our effort and commitment to protecting paradise, this holiday season local companies provided us with ideas about how to reduce waste while still giving thoughtful gifts to your loved ones.

Resource Depot in West Palm Beach said upcycling picture frames is one of the easiest homemade gifts to give.

"They may have a chip or something so you could repaint them, just give them a little bit of love, and they can become reusable again," said Chelsea Odum, the company's Director of Education & Artist Relations.

Another idea is for those who may have a stack of mismatched holiday cards sitting around. Odum said you can add random designs to them in order to give a little bit of a second life.

"The educational message we try and entice people to understand is reducing their waste and really being a responsible consumer and be thoughtful in they way they buy and dispose of products," said Odom.

Other gift ideas that are environmentally friendly include buying a bracelet from 4ocean, an international environmental group that removes trash from oceans and coastlines, that are made from trash collected in our waterways.

You can also check out the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for gift ideas that include adopting a sea turtle.
