BOCA RATON, Fla.-- Boca Raton has a new plan to keep its waterways clean. The city council approved a contract with 4ocean on Tuesday to have the Boca Raton-based company clean up the city's waterways.

4ocean is an international company that cleans up trash from the ocean one pound at a time. Crews were working in the Boca area before the city approached it.

“Residents saw us, city officials saw us, FWC saw us, and it is funny because they called us and contact us,” said 4ocean International Operations Manager Dave VanDenabeele.

The company will work on clearing any waterway in the city, including canals.

“Protecting our environment is so important to our city, we have gone above and beyond what other cities are doing,” said Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer.

The contract is for one year and will start right away.

VanDenabeel said he would like to see other cities set up similar service agreements to help keep their waterways clean.

“This is our backyard, so it is important for us to keep in clean,” he said.
