SAVANNAH, Ga. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office said they found more than just pineapples amid a shipment from Colombia late last year.
Officers working in Savannah, Georgia, in November said they inspected a commercial shipment of fresh pineapples that originated in Cartagena.
During the inspection, officers discovered 450 packages of cocaine weighing 1,157 pounds concealed in the fruit.
“This was an outstanding interception of narcotics by our CBP officers," said Lisa Beth Brown Savannah CBP Area Port Director in a written statement. “This seizure is a positive enforcement action against drug smuggling organizations and highlights the important work our officers do each day to stop illegal activity at our borders and ports of entry.”
The CBP officers said the cocaine is valued at more than $19 million, and the seizure remains under investigation.
On a typical day nationally, CBP said they seize more than 5,000 pounds of drugs.
