MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — The burglar captured on video cooking himself a hamburger before robbing a Jensen Beach restaurant has been arrested.
Martin County Sheriff's Detectives and Road Patrol Deputies arrested 34-year-old Patrick Benson on Saturday.
Benson was charged with burglary, grand theft, and attempted burglary after he was caught on surveillance video inside two Jensen Beach restaurants after hours.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office says Benson used bricks or large rocks to break the glass windows of the restaurants to gain entrance.
Sheriff William Snyder says the first burglary occurred June 7 at Jan’s Place.
Benson stole food, according to Snyder.
June 23rd, Benson is accused of smashing his way into the Wendy’s on Jensen Beach Boulevard.
Once inside, he is seen on surveillance footage making himself a hamburger.
“He was pretty careless,” Snyder says.
After eating his meal, Benson took off with a safe.
“It doesn’t look to me like he’s doing it out of hunger. I think he was after the money and I think he’s like we see often times with criminals. He's lazy and doesn’t want to work.”
On the same night, he also attempted to break into the Rocket Fuel gas station down the road.
However, his attempt to throw a stone through the glass door didn’t work.
Following the release of information, the Martin County Sheriff's Office received multiple tips from the community about who the suspected thief might be.
Patrick Benson was booked into the Martin County Jail and is also expected to face additional charges.
