Customers who have an email address registered with State Farm will receive a notice in their inbox with links to claim the money. Those without a registered email will receive a check in the mail.

The payout is not simply a goodwill gesture — it is required by the structure of the company. State Farm is a mutual insurer, meaning profitability triggers a dividend process.

Mark Friedlander of the Insurance Information Institute explained how it works.

"It is the structure of the companies; when companies are mutual insurers the dividend process is a normal course of business. When they hit a certain level of profitability they pay back to their customers," Friedlander said.

What to Look For

State Farm's website says that qualified customers with an email address on file with State Farm will receive a dividend payment selection email from donotreply@e.sfdividend.com. Use the unique ID/PIN information provided in the email to select your preferred payment option (digital or check) using the State Farm Dividend Payment Portal at sfdividend.com.

State Farm's Dividend Customer Contact Center can be reached at 1-888-808-9532. The company says they will not ask you to pay a fee to receive your dividend payment. Do not pay a fee, payment or send money.

Auto Insurers Profitability

Many auto insurers have been profitable. The top 5 auto insurers in Florida have lowered rates in the last year.

The same trend is not playing out in homeowners insurance, where insuring homes is vastly different from insuring cars.
