A major construction project in Delray Beach is making the streets safer. Roadwork began on NE 2nd Avenue in 2016, and another part of the plan is about to wrap up.

Phase Zero was finished about a year ago from NE 4th St. to George Bush Blvd. The street now has a highlighted bike lane and after sidewalks.

“Before I didn’t really ride my bike as much, so I didn’t use it. Now that it’s done, it is so convenient because you can take it down to the ave,” said cyclist Maren Emmerson.

She said she feels safe riding her bike along NE 2nd.

“I don’t really like riding on sidewalks so I personally go for the road or the bike path, and the bike path is a lot better,” she added.

Crews have been working on phase one from NE 8th St. to NE 13th St. That section of the project is set to open next week.

“I have friends that live in Lake Ida, and they take their whole family here and they feel safe,” said Bruce Bastian with Human Powered Delray.

Bastian said the wait for the whole street to open will be worth it.

Phase Two goes from NE 13th St. to NE 22nd St. Work just began and should last about six months. The last stage to Gulfstream Blvd will start in early 2019.
