Hermine leaves group of manatees stranded in Florida pond, rescue successful

Crews from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission removed seven manatees stranded in a Florida golf course pond Thursday.

The manatees ended up in the pond in Crystal River when high flood waters from Hurricane Hermine receded, leaving the aquatic mammals stranded.

One manatee was caught in an outflow tunnel after the strong force of the water prevented her from swimming away. FWC and golf course employees placed boards in front of the outflow to reduce the water pressure.

The manatees are expected to be released back into Kings Bay, their natural habitat, Thursday.
