The northern lights also known as aurora borealis, lit up the night sky in the lapland region of Finland over the weekend.

The sky turned shades of green followed by streaks of white and purple.

The colorful sky is a result of collisions between gases surrounding the earth and matter released by the sun's atmosphere.
