An angry elephant charged at villagers after her calf fell into a mud pit in Sri Lanka.

In a video distributed by Derana TV, a couple can be seen running after dumping their motorcycle when the mother elephant charged at them.

Villagers in the area informed wildlife officials earlier that a female elephant was attacking people on the road as her baby elephant had fallen into a pit, local media said.

An excavator was sent to dig out an escape path for the calf.

The operation took about four hours.

The elephants later reunited and disappeared into the jungle.
