TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Despite a plea from Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Gregory Holder, the University of South Florida Board of Trustees did not act on a request to readmit a former U.S. Army Green Beret expelled after firing his gun outside a Tampa gas station.
Army Staff Sgt. Clay Allred needs 17 credits to graduate. He was convicted last year of aggravated assault and other charges in the county's Veterans Treatment Court, which Holder oversees.
The Tampa Bay Times reports Holder took the unusual step of intervening on behalf of Allred, who was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Prosecutors agreed to two years of house arrest, and Allred was ordered to get treatment for his PTSD and alcohol dependence.
