ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- A Turkish tourist on his honeymoon was killed during an armed robbery in front of his wife in the heart of Orlando's tourist district.

Authorities say 52-year-old Osman Darcan died early Thursday from multiple gunshots fired by a robber who was trying to steal his wife's purse outside the hotel resort where they were staying.

Orange County Sheriff's Office Capt. Angelo Nieves says it was the first killing of a tourist in Orlando's tourism district in recent memory.

Nieves says the couple was on their honeymoon and had driven up from Miami on Wednesday.

Nieves says the crime is rare for the area, and the tourist district is among the safest areas in Orlando.

Orlando has been the top tourist destination in the United States for the past two years.
