HILLSBORO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a construction worker's right arm was ripped off by a piece of equipment in Florida.

News outlets report the 44-year-old man was rushed by ambulance to a Deerfield Beach hospital Thursday morning and then airlifted to a Fort Lauderdale hospital.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue says the man was operating an industrial auger, which is used to burrow into the ground, when his limb became trapped in the drill bit. The force caused a complete amputation below the shoulder.

Police say the man was conscious and in stable condition after the incident. Officials say surgeons were trying to reattach the arm.
