Cesar Sayoc, the Florida man accused of sending pipe bombs to several prominent Democrats and others made his first appearance in court Monday afternoon in Miami.
Sayoc, wearing a tan jumpsuit, was soft-spoken in court and his eyes at one point welled with tears. He mouthed the words 'I love you' to a person that may have been a relative.
Sayoc heard the judge read the five federal charges he faces.
"Once the government gives us additional information we will be able to evaluate it and see whether or not there's actually some other evidence there," said one of Sayoc's attorneys Jamie Benjamin.
Sayoc will stay in South Florida until at least Friday when he has another court hearing.
Bomb squads were called to a post office in Atlanta on Monday about a suspicious package sent to CNN, investigators said Monday, just hours before Sayoc's court hearing.
The FBI said via its Twitter account that the recovered package was "similar in appearance" to those sent by the 56-year-old.
Separately, a U.S. official told The Associated Press that Sayoc kept a list of elected officials and others who investigators believe were intended targets. The official also said authorities recovered soldering equipment, a printer, and stamps similar to those used on the package bombs.
Sayoc was arrested Friday outside a South Florida auto parts store after investigators said they identified him through fingerprint and DNA evidence. He will be prosecuted in New York.
