FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Police in Broward County say a homicide suspect was fatally shot after firing a weapon at officers who ordered him to get out of his car.

Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Rick Maglione told reporters that officers initially used "less lethal methods" when the suspect refused to leave his vehicle outside a shopping plaza Wednesday night.

The chief says the suspect fired at officers and an officer fired back, killing him. No one else was injured.

The officers who confronted the suspect work in a multi-agency task force, and police spokeswoman Casey Liening says it's not yet clear which agency's officer opened fire. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate.

The suspect's name hasn't been released. Liening didn't release details about the homicide case.
