The mother of two young children found dead inside a Miramar home was taken into custody and charged with two counts of premeditated murder.
Sophia Allison Hines, 40, of Philadelphia, Pa., was arrested late Wednesday night. Officials told NBC 6 that Hines was visiting South Florida at the time of the incident.
Authorities responded to the 6100 block of Southwest 38th St. near 62nd Ave. around 5:20 p.m. following a 911 call for a medical emergency involving two children.
Miramar police officers performed CPR on both children until fire rescue crews arrived, but the 7-month-old boy and 3-year-old girl were pronounced dead at the scene.
When police initially arrived, they found two people standing outside the home, one of the children's parents and a relative, who directed them to the apartments in the back.
A neighbor said, before police arrived, a frantic woman went to his house to use his phone.
"She just seemed a bit hysterical, that was it. She wasn't yelling. She started crying actually as I left, she started crying," he explained.
He said he gave her his phone and she made several calls.
