MIAMI-- Officials showed off Miami International Airport's new state-of-the-art baggage handling system Tuesday. It could become a model for the rest of the country.

The $324 million system doubles the speed and efficiency of baggage screening.

In addition to nearly 9 miles of conveyor belts, the system utilizes 12 of the latest explosives detection machines.

The upgraded system features 102 mobile inspection tables, currently the largest airport installation of automated guided vehicle technology in the world.

The system will be able to screen 7,000 pieces of luggage every hour.
