MIAMI (AP) — One person was injured after a minivan slammed into a strip mall where Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker was speaking at a campaign event in Miami Gardens.

The Miami Herald reports the van crashed a few dozen feet from where Booker was speaking Sunday. The van ended up between two parked cars and a structural beam. The driver could be heard wailing inside. Event organizers urged everyone to exit the building. Police later confirmed it was an accident.

The New Jersey Senator remained calm and stayed to answer questions and take photos. The crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to the Booker who turned 50 Saturday.

Booker spent much of his time talking about voting rights and has been critical of Florida's Legislature, calling a House bill requiring that former felons pay all fines, fees and restitution before regaining the right to vote a "poll tax."
