BARTOW, Fla. (AP) — A central Florida man with a history of mental problems has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for fatally stabbing his mother.

The Ledger reports that 38-year-old Micah Lee Hobbs was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder as part of a deal with prosecutors. Hobbs had been facing a possible death sentence.

Authorities say Hobbs repeatedly stabbed his mother, Eva Marie Hobbs, with a kitchen knife at their home in March 2014. He was later found laughing on a road near the home.

Hobbs had been taken into custody 14 times under Florida's Baker Act, and officials say his mother was trying to have him held involuntarily for psychological evaluation the day before she was killed.
