A man was struck and killed by a Tri-Trail train in Pompano Beach Tuesday morning, officials said.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said the man apparently walked around a train safety gate that had its bells and lights activated, right into the train's path.

The incident happened round 10:30 a.m.

The man was walking east on the southside sidewalk near 1200 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd.

The train was headed north when witnesses said the man ignored the safety measures, walked on the tracks and was struck by the train.

The train's engineer was unaware of the crash and continued on his route into Palm Beach County.

He was later notified and cooperated with investigators. Detectives are working to identify the pedestrian.
