PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) — An iconic four-headed pindo palm tree has been cut down despite a Florida city's efforts to save it.
For years, the tree was a popular photo spot in Panama City. City officials sought the advice of experts, tried injections and chemical treatments and made maintenance a priority. But the News Herald reports the fronds slowly turned brown and a study by Bartlett Tree Experts determined the tree was dying.
Randy Wright of Gulf Coast Tree Service says removing the tree was "emotional." It was dismantled limb by limb.
The newspaper reports officials hope to make commemorative plaques from the wood.
Experts say the tree was between 80 and 100 years old. For now, the area where the tree stood will be left as a green space.
