COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Security footage shows the moment a young girl's scream scared a bear away from her Southwest Florida home.
"I saw it move, come up and then when I screamed it ran off like really fast," says 7-year-old Lilly Hess.
Vanessa Hess, Lilly's mom, says she sees bears in her yard a lot, but it's rare to see them during the day.
"That made me a little bit nervous because usually when we see the bears the kids are in bed asleep," she says.
Last year video captured a different bear and her cubs breaking into the home's lanai to get to their trash. "We are aware when we walk out the door especially at night time that there could be a bear around the corner," Hess says.
As the number of close encounters keeps climbing, bear-proofing their home is now part of the Hess family routine. "We're in their backyard just as much as they're in ours so learn to live together and be safe," Hess says.
