A Fort Pierce police officer was recognized for his bravery Tuesday.
Officer Keith Holmes was in Tallahassee with his family to receive a Medal of Heroism for helping five teen girls, ages 13 and 14, who were swept onto rocks on the Fort Pierce Inlet North Jetty on July 2014.
Gov. Rick Scott praised the officer during a state Cabinet meeting.
The officer arrived at the Jetty when the teens were screaming for help. Because of the currents and waves, a boat could not get close enough to them.
Holmes swam against strong current to reach each girl and took them one-by one to the rescue boat.
