Florida Senator Bill Nelson has filed new legislation which calls for anyone who is, or has been, investigated for possible ties to terrorism to be entered into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System which is commonly referred to as NCIS.

They system is used by gun shop owners to run background checks.

Senator Nelson says the measure would require that the system automatically notify the FBI if a prospective gun customer is, or has been, investigated for potential ties to terrorism.

“We’re not saying: don’t sell guns to someone just because they were investigated,” Senator Nelson said in statement. “But having a system in place that alerts the FBI if someone they once investigated is suddenly trying to purchase multiple assault weapons is just common sense.”

The legislation will head to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration.
