The man behind the wheel of a deadly drunk driving accident that left a popular St. Petersburg chef dead has been sentenced.
Jason Mitchell will spend the next 30 years in jail, in addition to serving 15 years of probation for the death of Aaron Davis.
Davis, 31, was killed in downtown St. Pete while walking home after work around 2 a.m. in April 2015.
At the time, Davis's wife was just days away from giving birth to their second child, a boy.
Police said Mitchell was speeding eastbound on Fourth Avenue North after exiting the interstate. Members of the DUI squad from the police department saw the vehicle, which was a Hertz rental car, and tried to stop it as it turned onto Second Street.
But the vehicle accelerated quickly, heading southbound and running a red light at Third Avenue North.
Davis was crossing Second Street in the north crosswalk of Central Avenue. They had the green light, and the crossing signal, when the vehicle ran the red light and hit them both.
LaFrance was sideswiped and spun onto the pavement, while Davis was projected onto the hood and windshield before vaulting over the roof.
Davis ended up on the west sidewalk of Second Street, about 100 feet south of Central Avenue.
The vehicle then hit two concrete light pillars, ripping the front right wheel off the vehicle.
Mitchell ran after the crash.
