LAUDERHILL, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say a 3-year-old South Florida boy drowned in an algae-filled swimming pool while staying with his great-grandparents.
Lauderhill police spokesman Gregory Solowsky tells local news outlets that a frantic family member flagged down an officer who was in the area on an unrelated matter Sunday afternoon. The officer called for help in searching for the child around 4:10 p.m.
A short time later they found the child in the pool.
He says the great-grandparents told investigators the boy often walked between their house and another relative's home "several doors down." They say he also liked to play hide-and-seek.
The boy had been with the great-grandparents since Thursday because of the holiday. His parents were notified.
The case is under investigation.
