Blast, transformers catch fire in Miami-Dade at FPL facility, reports say

Transformers caught fire at an Florida Power and Light facility in NW Miami-Dade County Tuesday afternoon.

An explosion was heard by police officers in the area, according to WSVN.

The station reported multiple transformers on fire.

It said a foam truck from Miami International Airport was dispatched to the scene near Northwest 72nd Avenue and 64th Street.

Roads in the area are closed.

As many as 10,000 FPL customers were reportedly without power as a result, NBC 6 reported.

No injuries have been reported.

FPL released this statement late Tuesday afternoon:

We are aware of a fire at our substation in Miami Springs initially affecting approximately 10,000 customers. No injuries were reported. We have crews on scene working to restore service safely and as quickly as possible. Currently approximately 3,500 customers remain without service. We will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
